It brings a smile to my face to review images and recollect all the fun moments from this recent NY DUMBO shoot. 50 years young, the beautiful woman in purple (dress) celebrated her half century birthday with fourteen other lovely ladies traveling from all over North America!
They all also happen to be related (no shortage of lovely genes here!) and to have the opportunity to travel into NYC for a long weekend of sight-seeing, dining, & leisure — all with the intention of reuniting and celebrating their wonderful sister/aunt/great-aunt’s life and milestone birthday — was one they certainly seemed to live-up and enjoy.
I feel lucky to have met this inspiring bunch – their positive energy was contagious. Here’s a taste of their time by Jane’s Carousel

Three cheers for spring! This new baby came along to grace us with her presence at a lovely time of year… I spent a sunny Friday morning with tiny Mila and her family earlier this month and it was a treat! Such a sweet home they have built together.

Preview of the Chelsea shoot…

It’s been a while since I posted… here’s the latest!
I flew to the city of lights this past February – Las Vegas! and WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) trade show and convention allowed me the opportunity listen to and meet some of the best in the business as they spoke about their various paths to success, inspirations, and photography careers in general. So wonderful to meet the new people that I did. It might be hard to miss next year… it is an annual event.
(shout out to my brother Mike for being the best Vegas host a girl could ask for!)
I also published that facebook page I’ve been meaning to use (finally!) and you can view it here: facebook.com/jennifermckennaphoto.
On to the subject of this post: a preview from yesterday’s shoot in Chelsea, Manhattan. And she said she was worried about modeling… Get out of here, gorgeous girl!

Up to this point, all my work has come to me via word of mouth. Whether in reference to design or photography, I was so pleasantly surprised and genuinely amazed by the power of a network of friends and satisfied clients. Nevertheless, my cautious personality (multiplied by an unhealthy drive toward impossible perfection) left me shying away from marketing on my own.
Holding back led to feeling the weight of “live and learn” hard, and I saw just how “waiting” turns into missed opportunity. But if not for experience, where would any of us be? From every misstep, grew a greater sense of urgency, and a better understanding of myself, my work, and what needed to be done.
The culmination of all that my work and I have been through in the past year has led me to conclude that regret isn’t something with which any of us want to live. So, world, I’m going to be better about blogging. I’m going to connect with you online and I’m going to put myself out there. I’m going to smile when I stumble and jump up with vigor and grace 😉 I’m going to be me, confidently, and love that you love doing the same.
Let(‘s) go.
Window to my world:
At this moment I am…
slowly checking off items on an enormous to do list.
keeping winter temperatures at bay.
enjoying the sunshine… wanting to dive headfirst into it, but remaining productive indoors.
thinking about the new year, what it holds, and how to make things happen.
Happy Sunday the 23rd, world. I’m ready for us to meet!

Best Bridal Shower Cake I’ve Ever Seen…

A weekend or so back, I attended a beautiful bridal shower. Complete with traditional games, sweets, and party favors, the event went off without a hitch – yet! …haha, uhm, terrible* – and we all went away with incredibly satisfied stomachs. Thanks to the fabulous preparation and cooking of Linda McDonald and her equally talented mother, there was no shortage of food, nor festive decor. My little inspiration board below was shot in 10min or less – not because it didn’t deserve more attention than that, but – because I was ready to thoroughly enjoy myself as a guest and friend. HOWEVER, the moment I saw the cake that Mrs. Dottie Ingrassia had created, I was glad I didn’t leave the camera at home!
I haven’t really posted about my admiration for the art I stumble upon daily, but here is where I start. The artistry that went into this adorable creation made my insides flutter. I got so excited when I saw her (yes, her! …a bridal dress cake complete with bride). Dressed in ribbon, and even a tiny headpiece, brunette barbie sat inside her gorgeous and delicious-looking white frosting ballgown dress 🙂 Hello, creativity! If you don’t sell more than one of these before the new year I will buy one myself, haha. (she doesn’t know she’s selling her baking services yet, but come on, who wouldn’t want one of these? too cute!)
*when bad puns come to me I feel I ought to let them out and then just apologize for them. there are worse quirks 🙂

Despite having an extremely busy past month, I can’t help but blog a brief post on a photo session from this past weekend! More on this duo and the goals behind this shoot to come, but I don’t think it even takes more than one photo to see the good nature of these individuals. Even with a near stranger clicking away, a yard or less from their faces, Martin and Sandra were happy, free-spirited, easygoing, and gorgeous inside and out.
I can’t tell you how much it means to me to build friendships and connections through my work. Welcomed into not only someone’s afternoon for a shoot, but also their home and heart makes what I do behind the lens that much better, more authentic, and worthwhile. Knowing oneself, and being at ease with your surroundings allows me to catch that moment that will hold the most meaning for you. I try to let this come out in people, but when it manifests itself without any effort, I am inspired. Without further ado, (did I say this was going to be brief, oops!) I present you with the range of seriousness that colored this session…

Both of Aline’s daughters were unable to see her this mother’s day. While one makes her way through a maze of new faces and places – the other through text after text on Organic Chemistry in preparation for one of many final exams – Aline finds time to enjoy the beauty of her hill top home, where everything passes by a little more slowly.
Her eldest wears little pieces of mom, a crocheted wrap and a string of freshwater pearls – she’s on her way to a mother’s day brunch. She calls her mom, and smiles at the light in her voice. Aline sounds happy – as she always does over the phone – and it’s contagious. “Say hi to Chris’ family!” And you know that even though her girls are hundreds of miles away her wishes are sincere.
For the thens, the nows, and everything to come, we are forever grateful for and shaped by your love. We live every moment as we do because of you. There will never be one perfect way to express how we feel about this gift, but I think that’s alright. There are many:

Happy First Day of Spring!

So I’ve been dreaming about tropical vacations for the past, oh, 5 months? Thanks to the imminent warmer weather in this turn of seasons, there is finally substantial light at the end of a rainy gray tunnel! What a beautiful weekend we had. I spent mine down in D.C., on a little “mini vacation”, where a very special little man just experienced a first full year of life. Happy 1st Birthday to the ever sweet and smiley guest of honor!

I’m proud to call this lovely set of people family <3 Thank you for a wonderful weekend!

On our travels about the city, I couldn’t keep from expressing how much I LOVE the D.C. metro platforms. So open, clean, and inviting. Haha. Smooth escalators that wrap their way down each side make for a pleasant entry/exit… Chris even said it reminded him of Disney World, and coming from him that’s the highest of compliments. Did I mention the cathedral-like ceilings and lack of harsh light? And lining each edge of the platform are these little red circles that calmly pulse on and off as the train pulls in. Yes, I’m admitting my excitement over this detail. “Underground Oasis: a D.C. metro story”:

(Gallery Pl stop, L’Enfant Plaza stop, Union Station, National Museum of American History – First Ladies exhibit, NMAH abstract flag (40’x19′) above the entrance to a new Star-Spangled Banner gallery, and a bloomin’ sign of Spring!)
