Both of Aline’s daughters were unable to see her this mother’s day. While one makes her way through a maze of new faces and places – the other through text after text on Organic Chemistry in preparation for one of many final exams – Aline finds time to enjoy the beauty of her hill top home, where everything passes by a little more slowly.
Her eldest wears little pieces of mom, a crocheted wrap and a string of freshwater pearls – she’s on her way to a mother’s day brunch. She calls her mom, and smiles at the light in her voice. Aline sounds happy – as she always does over the phone – and it’s contagious. “Say hi to Chris’ family!” And you know that even though her girls are hundreds of miles away her wishes are sincere.
For the thens, the nows, and everything to come, we are forever grateful for and shaped by your love. We live every moment as we do because of you. There will never be one perfect way to express how we feel about this gift, but I think that’s alright. There are many:

Funny the time we spend time post processing our images to get them to look as they do in these old family photos…
(the new irrelevance of patience and passage of time to create these dear weathered works abounds – and the touch of a couple buttons yields a quite decent equivalent… Yes, there’s an app for that)
Anyhow, my fingers fly as I type out this post because I am SO EXCITED to show you these old family photos that I’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. Yes! My mother just sent them my way, while she continues the huge undertaking of archiving all the negatives and prints she has accumulated throughout our lives.
I won’t bother to tell you the number of files she’s scanned in so far, as it may sicken those who aren’t as photo obsessed as our family clearly is, but it’s large!
I LOVE going through these photos. Just like old possessions, photos are my window to a past that I want to see, share, and remember. I DO think that my ever present interest in photography growing up had a lot to do with the joy I got from looking at the moments we have captured on film.
I may have lost you by now, but if not, my other point is this: I’ll be taking on the project of restoring this old photo of me da when he was just a wee lad, and I’m looking forward to posting the before and after when it’s complete π

A couple months ago (eep, I know, long overdue) I had the amazing opportunity of visiting Mariah Gale’s new photography studio! For those of you unacquainted with this talented young lady, please visit any number of her online portals (of which she somehow manages to maintain a ridiculously high amount!) and witness her multifaceted growth as a photographer and business woman extraordinaire.
Finally having her own loft-style studio space is so well deserved, as she juggles more than is humanly possible, haha. “How does she do it!?” I’m looking forward to posting some past work that I’ve done with her, and singing additional praises, for she has been an enormous inspiration to me. But let’s talk about this space! Full of our favorite ingredient – beaming natural light – the studio was a great setting in which to get together with some of my most artistically gifted friends and play.
Although the photos speak for themselves, I do want to express my admiration for the genius of Meg McCormick’s modeling. She’s versatile, artistic, graceful, full of fire, peaceful, strong, blasΓ©, beautiful …the list goes on. I only wish we had more time to shoot and create!
PS – we’re definitely shooting a Nantucket set this summer if I have anything to say about it, so come back to the blog for that!
This shoot was special to me, not only because of the fabulous company, but also because some pieces used in wardrobe were “relics” of my mother’s past. In the past 15+ years, I’ve spent hours upon hours looking through my mom’s vintage wears. There’s something about the experience that goes so far beyond an interest in clothes. I’d slowly flick through a set of hangers in the guestroom closet: thinking about how and when she might have worn them, and what I’d be like at that age. Funny how it feels to think about what you’ll be like when you’re “older” and then to live it, thinking about how you thought it would feel π But more importantly, strange how it feels to think about your mother in a different role… and inspiring how it feels, to have a connection to her past in your present and future <3
Ok, on to the photos! Gosh.
setting up the seamless: miss Mariah Gale
…there are so many photos I should add to this post. check back soon because I’m sure I will. Ha π
Until then!

Updates! (5/24/10):
Mimi Phan – artist, designer, photographer, model – an inspiring, motivational, and all around lovely person. I don’t think anyone could say a bad thing about her. She is smart and talented, and most importantly, a joy to be around! Check out her work online…
…the surrealist vibe Meg’s poses/the random clock/the assorted chairs bring into play here – I can’t tell you how much I love it!

So I’ve been dreaming about tropical vacations for the past, oh, 5 months? Thanks to the imminent warmer weather in this turn of seasons, there is finally substantial light at the end of a rainy gray tunnel! What a beautiful weekend we had. I spent mine down in D.C., on a little “mini vacation”, where a very special little man just experienced a first full year of life. Happy 1st Birthday to the ever sweet and smiley guest of honor!
I’m proud to call this lovely set of people family <3 Thank you for a wonderful weekend!
On our travels about the city, I couldn’t keep from expressing how much I LOVE the D.C. metro platforms. So open, clean, and inviting. Haha. Smooth escalators that wrap their way down each side make for a pleasant entry/exit… Chris even said it reminded him of Disney World, and coming from him that’s the highest of compliments. Did I mention the cathedral-like ceilings and lack of harsh light? And lining each edge of the platform are these little red circles that calmly pulse on and off as the train pulls in. Yes, I’m admitting my excitement over this detail. “Underground Oasis: a D.C. metro story”:
(Gallery Pl stop, L’Enfant Plaza stop, Union Station, National Museum of American History – First Ladies exhibit, NMAH abstract flag (40’x19′) above the entrance to a new Star-Spangled Banner gallery, and a bloomin’ sign of Spring!)

More photos from the session with Suffolk County’s singing sisters. We had a great time braving the cold temperatures and finding ways to shoot indoors. Their town center (big beautiful brand new building) provided for some great light and interesting backdrops. Everyone who worked there was very kind in allowing us to get the shots we did. I’m sure the girls have been back to express our gratitude!

Last week I hit the city with musician Josh Lattanzi of The Candles to shoot some promo shots! After touring for years with other notable musicians and bands, Josh’s first solo project has launched him into a new phase where he is happy to announce his recent signing to The End Records. Now touring the Northeast and Midwest, he performs his latest songs with crowd favorites such as “Here or Gone” and “Anywhere tonight”. The Candles return home to play at Mercury Lounge on the 6th of March, so mark your calendars =) Here are some shots and outtakes from the set:

A teaser from today’s shoot out East… These girls are so lovely and sweet. I will without a doubt be diving into the details of these performers’ talents as I post their photos. For now, suffice it to say, their on the spot a capella vocals gained them 3 gigs in about 5min. Woo! Oh, and did I mention that they’re drop dead gorgeous π I present you, Mary & Rose:

So time is flying, and it’s already well into December! Keeping up with some things – brought home my 1st Christmas tree this past week (weeee), and managed to schedule a date to cook Chris’ family some holiday food in quasi “apartment warming” fashion. However, I haven’t done a very good job at posting here (or anywhere! so blog readers, feel lucky). I hope you and yours are having a wonderful holiday season. We had our first snow storm this past weekend and it was delightful.
Last week I was also able to make it into the city to catch a fabulous show by the Candles and Hymns. Photos below, but you should LISTEN too! You will be happy you did.
To bring the week to a close was a spread of great food, music* and company at the beautiful Cannata household.
*relaying a message from the night’s hostess: Holiday must-have = Celion Dion’s album These Are Special Times featuring Andrea Bocelli… a joyful experience

While a few chains of lights and baskets of scented pine cones now grace the apartment, I have yet to photo document this new holiday decor. However, heading up north for Thanksgiving allowed me to capture some images from my childhood home. What a joyful visit and time spent with people I love. Cold November winds were no match for late afternoon light and a warm happy hearth. I hope your holiday was just as grand.

Something about a subway stop, a cab ride, and “the rest is history”… From beginning to end, it has become a Manhattan fairy tale. And my goodness am I excited to shoot some engagement photos with them!
Paul and Rachel have a great “how we met” story, but an even greater, impossible to go unnoticed, love for one another. Not only are they beautiful people inside and out, but I’ve also had the pleasure of knowing them before they announced their engagement and I consider them dear friends.
Curious about their story? You’ll have to wait until our photos go up! We have some exciting concepts to explore…
For now, I leave you with a candid photo from this summer. HOW SWEET ARE THEY? More to come!
